When making concrete three basic ingredients are needed: Cement, Aggregate (Sand, Gravel, and/or Crushed Rock), and Water. Once the three ingredients are mixed together, the hydrated cement cement bonds the aggregate together and with time hardens. Immediately after mixing, the concrete is malleable and can be molded into different shapes. The concrete hardens as it drys and loses its malleability.
Jackie and George, being civil engineers, know how to make concrete all to well. On the day of their wedding in the beautiful Avon Gardens, they opted not to do the traditional unity candle ceremony, but to instead do a unity concrete mixing ceremony. Jackie poured a container of water into a mixing glass while George poured the cement/aggregate mix into the same mixing glass. Then they mixed the ingredients together, before pouring the ingredients into two pre-made wooden boxes. After pouring the newly made concrete into the wooden boxes, Jackie and George took a very small metal bridge and pushed it into the malleable concrete, connecting the two boxes, and turning them from two separate concrete blocks into one structure with each side dependent on the other. This was a fantastic metaphor for marriage, especially when considering how long concrete structures can last. Here’s to hoping their marriage lasts as long as the dome of the Pantheon. Steve and I loved this unity ceremony and hope to see many more couples putting their own twist on the unity ceremony in the future.
