{Something Personal: Christmas with The Van Elks}

FILED IN: The Van Elks

…Okay… mostly Iain.  I’m sorry! BUT  wouldn’t you much rather see his face anyway?  Plus, someone has to be behind the camera. It’s kind of funny how I always volunteer. Coincidence?
Well, we loved spending Iain’s first Christmas at home, opening gifts as a family.  Steve’s gift to me was my favorite. Although I loved the gift, it was all in the wrapping.  I told him not to buy anything for me, but knew he would. This wasn’t not female trickery, the iphone 4s’ were supposed to be our gifts to one another.  Well, I unwrap my gift, open up the box. Nothing.  I laughed but secretly thought it was a cruel trick.  He grabbed the box like something got lost in it, flipped it over and said, “Oh here it is.”  He had taped it to the bottom of the box. I laughed so hard!  I opened up the tape covered envelope to find a spa package at a local spa.  Best. husband. ever.  I’m totally using that this month.

We headed over to my parents home afterwards where E opened more gifts and cared less in less about actually gifts and more about grandma’s glass decor.  He knows the good stuff. We were holding out on him.   His favorite gifts ended up being a train that shoots out balls, a cup with a straw, facial tissue (yes, I bought him a box of Kleenexes to play with), and some straws (he is fascinated with straws, and I went all out and bought the bendy ones).

My parents are wonderful cooks, so we filled our stomachs and hung out all day, so we could fill our stomachs again.  I ate a reasonable amount of food. They cooked a WHOLE TURKEY and a ham for 5 adults! Who does that- um the Shafers, that’s who. We bring it. Go all out… or go home… hungry.
