Sunflower Pictures with the Van Elk Family

FILED IN: Portraits

Almost a month ago we celebrated my birthday! Jenn had a lot of plans for my birthday. By far my favorite part of the day was spending time with her and kids at Tuttle Orchards. We brought a camera and created a bunch of pictures in the sunflower field there. They kids were laughing and having so much fun. I want to walk ya’ll through the whole ay though cause it was so much fun!

The Morning and a Delicious Breakfast

Jenn surprised me on my birthday. I wake up with Iain most days to get him ready for school. Jenn turned my alarm off and turned her alarm on. So, she woke up with Iain and let me sleep in an extra hour. She also got Nora ready for preschool and took her to preschool too. It was great.

When I did wake up, it was to a delicious breakfast of poached eggs on buttered toast. I hated runny eggs as a kid, but as an adult they are one of my favorite breakfast foods. Jenn also made me coffee. For our anniversary (which was earlier in the month) she bought me a pour over coffee kit. On my birthday, she made me a batch of pour over coffee. It was heavenly.

The Afternoon and a Fantastic Lunch

For lunch we went to North End BBQ! It’s one of the best barbecue restaurants in the Indianapolis area. Seriously though, their brisket just falls to pieces when your fork touches it. Also, their fries are cooked in truffle oil and have jalapenos diced up in them. Their cornbread is the kind that’s sweet but also dries out your whole mouth. It’s a very good place. It’s one of my favorite places. I ordered and ate all of those things on my birthday.

North End BBQ also has a great bourbon selection. One of my favorite bourbons is the Elijah Craig Small Batch, but you can get that anywhere. So I ordered the Elijah Craig 18 year old which is a bit harder to find. It was delicious, though it had a hint of a maple syrup sweetness to it. Jenn had the Yellowstone Select Straight Bourbon and that was also very nice.

Late Afternoon and Sunflower Pictures

After the kids came home from school and pre-school, we went to Tuttle Orchards. Tuttle is one of the best places to go for family fun in the area. They have pumpkins, apples, corn mazes, and sunflowers. They’re open year round. Tuttle also has a brilliant play area for kids with swingsets, play houses, farm equipment, pedal cars, a rope maze, and a giant hay slide.

When we arrived we headed back to the sunflower field to do some pictures! I love my family, sunflowers, and photography. So, it’s no surprise that Jenn planned an awesome photo session for me to shoot with her and the kids. Don’t worry though, she stole the camera and snapped a few photos of me too. Iain and Nora were surprisingly well behaved during the whole thing and really cute with each other. My favorite part was when Jenn took her jacket an hat off and the kids almost instantly snatched them up to dress like Mommy. These kids have my whole heart.

We had to let the kids play in the playground for a while after the sunflower field. They had so much fun running through the mazes and playing with the pedal cars. Nora especially liked the swing sets while Iain was more a fan of the obstacle course. And we couldn’t leave without hitting up the store and getting some apple donuts.

Scarlet Lane Brewery

If you’ve made the mistake of spending any time with me, then you probably already know that I love Scarlet Lane Brewery. Eirik Bloodaxe is my favorite beer. It’s strong and wonderful. And, I also love bourbon. So, it’s not too hard to figure out that I would go crazy for Barrel Aged Eirik Bloodaxe. Well, we went to Scarlet Lane’s brewery and they had it on tap. What a wonderful day! I only drank one glass, because it is like 10% ABV. But the flavors in that beer are out of this world.

Dinner

For Dinner we went to a nearby Mexican restaurant. It is called Los Agaves Grill. I know, it’s super basic to list Mexican food as your favorite type of food. I don’t care though. Mexican food is wonderful and it is my favorite. The kids ate quesadillas while Jenn and I had burritos. We’d never been to this place before, but it was very good. I’d definitely go back.
